the five questions to ask yourself when imposter syndrome comes knocking
Let’s be honest, we have all battled a case of Imposter Syndrome at some point in our life. You know, that nagging voice in the back of your head that says, “Yep, you're right, you suck. And not only do you suck, everyone else thinks you suck too.” Ok, maybe a little dark, but you know what I mean.
This week, I have had a full-blown case of “imposteritus”. So much so, that I considered giving in to the inner bully in my head and conceding total defeat.
And then it hit me. I am not alone. Many of us wonder how everyone else seems to have it all figured out while we are doing our best not be exposed as a complete fraud. So I asked myself, “what can I do to shut down my inner bully when she starts running at the mouth?”
Here are the five questions that I asked myself as my own “imposter syndrome gut check” and you can do the same.
1. Would I Talk to My Best Friend Like This?
Two words, “Hell No!” I would remind her of the badass that she is and tell her to re-adjust her crown.
2. What’s the Actual Evidence That I’m a Hot Mess?
Feelings are not facts. I will say it again for the people in the back - feelings are not facts. Just because I feel a certain way does not make it the truth. Usually, these feelings are rooted in my own internal fears, not any kind of proof from an outside source.
3. Who Benefits When I Doubt Myself?
Not me, that’s for sure! Letting imposter syndrome win, is the epitome of handing control over to someone else. And I do like my control - I mean I am an Enneagram 8 (more on that to come in my next blog post!)
4. Have I Already Done Hard Things and Survived?
Um, yes. Enough said.
5. did i just get here by accident, or BECAUSE i actually worked my ass off?
Well, last time I checked, no one was handing out careers, relationships, second chances, or new beginnings at the door. It takes hustle, hard work, and perseverance!
final thougts
So here is the funny thing about Imposter Syndrome, it only shows up when you’re doing something worth doing. So take it as a weird compliment and keep moving forward. You’ve got this! You are challenging yourself, stepping out of your comfort zone, and becoming exactly who you are supposed to be. And that my friend is the definition of a badass.
